We've submitted the second of our regular reports to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on the rural impacts of the recession. Our briefing helps inform his contribution to the National Economic Council, which meets weekly to consider impacts of the recession and recovery measures.

Our second report highlights the deepening economic downturn in rural areas but also includes examples 'bucking the trend' - new jobs, new contracts, new businesses and new workplaces, together with new support measures announced by a variety of national, regional and local agencies, organisations and communities.

It is quite simple all the layers of management are stopping us from getting the delivery of affordable low cost housing to the people who need it. We have been looking at how to use local materials particularly local timber taken out to  convert plantation forestry to constant cover forestry. A major push towards retraining people in eco- build would create sustainable employment, bio-diversty conservation and live/work spaces in rural england.
