Stuart Burgess, our chair and the government's Rural Advocate, has welcomed David Cameron' s views on the future of the countryside, in his speech to CPRE:

"I welcome this keynote speech from the leader of the opposition which shows his commitment not just to the countryside but to the rural communities who live there. It was good to hear David Cameron recognising the social impact of service provision on rural people and the vital role that small shops, schools, GPs Post Offices and affordable housing play in countryside life."

"I was particularly glad that he addressed the issue of affordable rural housing and said this would be a top priority for a future Conservative government including commitments on improving the uptake of rural exemption sites, shared equity schemes and the rapid expansion of community land trusts."

"In this process harnessing local energy and enthusiasm is vital. However, to solve the rural housing crisis requires a national commitment to delivering sufficient numbers of affordable homes and the ability to hold local authorities who fail to address their local needs to account."
