We're bringing together executives from across the housing, economic and finance sectors in an attempt to help tackle the rural housing crisis.

The lack of affordable housing is one of the most pressing issues facing rural communities. This Rural Experience visit to Essex will give key decision-makers the opportunity to see and hear directly about some of the issues facing rural communities.

We're asking the participants to consider how their organisations can rural proof their activities to improve the delivery of affordable rural housing, both individually and through working collectively.

The visit is being led by Sir Bob Kerslake, Chief Executive of the Homes and Communities Agency.

Although the problem of affordable housing in rural areas is very acute, the eco-towns programme is definitely not the answer.  In Leicestershire, there is a 10 year supply of housing with planning permission, but only 3-4,000 being built each year (30% affordable) before the current credit crunch.  Builders need more financial security from central Government, and certainly not an even bigger mountain to climb - i.e. eco-towns.      [KF, Leicestershire County Councillor]

Thanks for your comment Kevin. We'll pass this on to the team, so they can share it with the visit participants.
