Strong and Prosperous Rural Economies

Can you work with NESTA to explore Place and Innovation?

NESTA have issued 2 invitations to tender for projects of interest to researchers and practitioners in the field of rural innovation. NESTA works to transform the UK's capacity for innovation and develop its creative potential

The projects fall under NESTA’s Place and Innovation research strand which aims to answer 2 questions:

  • why are some places more innovative than others
  • what lessons can one place learn from other more innovative places

Project 1 is 'Creating places for innovation by absorption'.  It will explore ‘places’ including public spaces, schools, hospitals or other specially designed places created with the aim of facilitating knowledge transfer and learning to boost local innovation capacity.

The project will showcase successful ‘place (or space) making’ that has enhanced local and regional capacities to access, anchor or diffuse external knowledge. NESTA are looking for five contributions in the format of essays.

Project 2 is 'Best practice in international knowledge sourcing'.  This project will investigate practical problems for small enterprises associated with absorbing knowledge developed in foreign locations. It will look at small firms outside Cambridge, Oxford, and London - and beyond IT and biotech sectors, as those represent a majority of firms in the UK.
