Overview

The Rural Social Justice Coalition is a group of national organisations working to improve life for the most disadvantaged people in rural areas.

Together with people living and working in rural communities, the Rural Social Justice Coalition will highlight the problems of rural poverty and disadvantage, promote solutions and convince policy makers of the need for action.

  • Rural disadvantage and poverty is often hidden and dispersed so people needing help are less identifiable
  • There is a lack of affordable housing and house prices are higher than urban areas
  • Basic goods and services such as heating, fuel, power and transport cost more
  • People often have trouble accessing services such as banks, shops and petrol stations
  • Levels of disability are higher in rural areas, partly due to the aging population. This creates challenges for those providing services.
  • The lowest income groups are effectively forced to buy their own cars even though they cannot afford it due a lack of alternative transport
  • Fuel poverty is more common than in urban areas

The Rural Social Justice Coalition aims to bring about a fairer deal and a just and fairer future for rural people and communities.
