Rural Advocate

Stuart Burgess, the Rural Advocate

Overview

This project helps the Rural Advocate, Stuart Burgess, keep in touch with issues affecting rural communities, businesses and individuals, particularly those suffering disadvantage, through a strategic programme of activities.

We then create opportunities for him to pass on his findings to those who make a difference – ministers, officials and decision-makers. Stuart also links into our ongoing activities such as our participation inquiry into strengthening the role of local councillors.

We've produced a short film and a leaflet explaining more about Stuart's work as Rural Advocate

The programme aims to raise the profile and ensure the effectiveness of the Rural Advocate. Regular reports to our Commissioners form the basis of an annual Rural Advocate’s Report.

Stuart's Report of the Rural Advocate 2007, sets out a wide-ranging package of actions for government to lead on, to tackle the issues people raised with him over the past year, and ensure that rural areas continue to thrive.

Following last year's flooding and outbreaks of animal diseases, the Prime Minister asked Stuart to advise on how rural economies could be strengthened.
