Rural Futures Conference:The Rural Citizen 5 - 7 April 2006

Overview

'The Rural Citizen: governance, culture and wellbeing in the 21st century.'
University of Plymouth, 5-7 April 2006.

Dr Stuart Burgess, Rural Advocate, delivered a key note speech at this year's 'Rural Futures' Conference, held at the University of Plymouth.

"Within the Commission for Rural Communities, we have set out our own vision which states that 'England's rural communities should be diverse, thriving and sustainable, where everyone is able to play a full part in society and where no-one is disadvantaged'. This vision is deliberately broad as we passionately believe that, as far as is possible, the rural communities of England should be able to shape their own futures."

The Commission was very pleased to be able to support this event concerning people who live and dwell in rural areas.

We also funded assisted places to encourage the participation of small rural organisations and individuals from rural communities. The event brought together academics, policy-makers and practitioners from the private, public and voluntary sectors and keynote sessions included both academic and practitioner speakers.
