The State of Rural Services does not work. I live in rural Redcar and Cleveland Council area and it is not in your list of councils. I have put it into the 'Other' box but it I cannot go to the next page unless I tick a box for a council I do not belong to.

Thanks for your comment. I will pass this onto the Rural Services Network and hopefully they will be able to amend their survey.

Rural Services Network have now updated the survey, so you should be able to complete the 'Other' option and progress to the next page.

I've done an analysis of the CRC's rural services series 2007-2009 for the whole of the East Midlands GOR, using those facilities which I think people would expect to be provided locally ie Post Office, GP Surgery (all), Petrol Station, Primary School, Cash machine (all), Pub, Supermarket, Convenience Store - 8 facilities.  The distance band I've chosen is 0-2kms.  The analysis is based on '% of total delivery points in each Shire County/Unitary Authority which have ALL of the above 8 services/facilities within 0-2kms'.  I've found that the percentages for each LA in the East Midlands, split down between urban and rural have remained roughly the same between 2007, 2008 and 2009.  This seems rather surprising, given the ongoin closures of Post Offices, Food Shops and pubs in rural areas.  Per haps for the next survey in 2010 you should consider narrowing the distance bands to say 0-1km, 1km-2km, then every other 2km onwards, as this might capture these trends more fully?

Thank you for your comments. We are in the process of redesigning our accessibility analysis to use the road network to calculate distance rather than as the 'crow flies' which has been used previously. We will certainly reconsider the distances that we use.

We do monitor closure by counting numbers of outlets for each service and publish it by rural/urban and regionally, but if a closure takes place close to another outlet this would not show on the accessibility data.
