All of our State of the Countryside reporting is based on application of the Rural and Urban Definition, which was formally adopted by the Office for National Statistics and by government in 2004.

We’ve recently completed work to assess the extent to which this new definition is being used in the research, analysis and performance monitoring work of government departments and agencies.
