The variety of upland situations is well described. Here,in Nidderdale AONB the"incomers" are not second home owners but commuters often living in luxury but looking to their base town....Leeds,Bradford etc, for social life and services. This hits village life and trade.

The upland areas are very important as they provide the lungs for the urban communities.  I am concentrating on this aspect as I do not have experience of farming etc.  I have been a hill walker for many years and it has always provided me with release from pressure and just sheer joy and challenge.  It is important that land owners in these areas are able to make a decent living there and that local communities are supported so that services such as shops, tourist facilities can be provided.  There has been a large increase in off season walkers in recent years which is good but it also means that there is often more path damage for instance as the ground is often wetter then.

Our upland areas are vital and I wish your enquiry every success.  However I think it would be revalatory to some of our Government Ministers if they could experience some of the challenge, peace, sensory impact and sheer happiness to be gained from walking in these areas.  (I do NOT mean popping into Keswick for instance and saying they've visited the Lake District.)
