We believe better skills can bring rewards for both employers and employees through greater choice of jobs, better pay and increased productivity.

However it's important that the new centres and training offered are delivered in ways that can help rural employees and residents to improve their skills and qualifications. We've offered to help HEFCE & DIUS to rural proof the assessment process for the proposed new centres.

The reform of public services can make a tremendous impact on the lives of rural people. Often reform brings real improvement to the way in which services are delivered and to the choice which people can exercise.

This report highlights the need for public service reform to be seen through a 'rural lens' and particularly by those who are commissioning services and allocating resources.

We’re looking at the service needs of people in rural areas following major life events. We’ll be spending time talking to rural service users to find out about their experiences. This work will take a practical and positive approach, looking for solutions to providing fair access to services for rural communities.

This study provides an overview, synthesis and analysis of research and other evidence on ‘young carers’ and ‘young adult carers’ in the UK.

The government’s Review of Sub-National Economic Development and Regeneration (SNR) published in July 2007 recommended that a more consistent framework for regeneration be developed. ‘Transforming Places; Changing Lives: A Framework for Regeneration’ is CLG’s’s proposal for such a framework.

We have significant concerns over the emphasis in the framework on areas of concentrated deprivation and believe that the importance of and opportunity for regeneration outside these areas should be recognised.

We recommend a number of changes to the proposed outcomes and indicators in order to encourage greater devolution of responsibility for regeneration.

These changes would remove the requirement that regeneration is restricted to tackling areas of concentrated deprivation and would allow local government to decide what combination of area and placed based policies and initiatives would be most appropriate within and across their areas.
