Should I Stay or Should I Go? Rural youth transitions
We've been working with ippr north to explore the experiences of 16-19 year olds in rural areas and the measures that need to be taken to improve the options that are available to them as they become young adults. Young people today face complex decisions about their future lives. This transition can sometimes be even more difficult in rural areas due to the limited education and employment opportunities available locally.
The research drew together evidence from a range of sources:
- Statistical analysis of national and local surveys
- Focus groups with young people aged 16-19 to explore their experiences
- Interviews with representatives of organisations that work with young people
It makes a number of recommendations including:
- increased support for residental places at further education colleges
- increased provision of adequate transport options to enable young people to access post-16 opportunities
- provision of information, advice and guidance (IAG) for young people who are in employment (especially those in low skilled, low-paid employment)
- support for skills training and career opportunities to help those young people who want to stay in, or return to tutal areas, to help them develop careers in areas that have the potential for growth in rural communities
