This report presents an update on research first carried out in 1999 by the Countryside Agency and is against the background of an impending programme of post office closures that will affect both rural and urban areas.

Post offices combined with village shops play a crucial part in rural economies and provide a focus for community life. This study investigates the significance and co-dependency of combined rural post offices and village shops in England and provides an overall perspective on their viability.

The findings are important to the forthcoming restructuring of the post office network as the evidence is that without the post office element of these joint enterprises, a significant number of village shops would not survive.
