We welcome the Government’s consultation launched today on proposals to expand the remit of Post Offices to include banking and other financial services. The current set of proposals reflect many of the recommendations made in our submission to the BERR Select Committee’s Inquiry on the future of the post office earlier this year.

The news that the Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group are to sell off almost a thousand branches, and reports that HSBC are to close over 50 branches this year, raises fresh concerns that many rural localities will lose their last remaining bank.
